JP O'Meara looking to move on to regional title fights
December 17, 2024 Ealing boxer John Patrick O’Meara hopes that his fourth professional victory in a six-round bout with Jayro Duran on a York Hall show will have set him up for more frequent and increasingly challenging fights in 2025 with regional title fights a distinct possibility. ‘I’ve won two six rounders on points this year and I took every round in both. I’m undefeated in four bouts and hoping for big things next year. I’ve trained since I was ten and boxing is all I’ve ever known. The sport demands sacrifice in terms of the how you spend your time and the need to diet. I have missed out on activities with family and friends but I’m very dedicated to it and wouldn’t change anything. I have a strong team including Adam Martin my coach at New Era Boxing Gym in Merstham and my manager Jamie Conlan who have my best interests at heart. I’ve fantastic support from my large, extended family – I’ve five sisters and one brother - and my friends and my girlfriend Victoria.’ The former student of St. Joseph’s Primary school and Cardinal Wiseman High O’Meara is best known as J’. P.’ and joined the professional ranks two years following an excellent amateur boxing career in which he won most of his seventy bouts. ‘I’m proud that I got to represent England and Team GB in tournaments here and abroad. Boxing runs in the family as my dad, brother and a cousin all boxed as professionals. I’m not sure I’d want my future children to take it up though as lots of boxers don’t get the rewards due to them for all the effort they put in. Turning professional was an eye opener as I’ve found out boxing is as much a business as a sport if not more so. Maybe that’s true for all sports.’
Southpaw fighter O’Meara admires Manny Pacquiao, Vasiliy Lomachenko and Jesse Rodriquez who are ‘all southpaws like me. Southpaw stance means leading with a right-hand jab. I look for styles that I can imitate in my bouts. I’m also a big West Ham fan so I’m following them much of the time but just switching off to be with my family is what makes me happy. There’s not much money in boxing to start with and boxers rely on ticket sales and sponsorship. I’m lucky to have some generous backers including Ealing Roofing, Boxclever and W5 Physio meaning I can concentrate on the sport full time. ‘I’m a local lad from Ealing chasing his dreams. I’m not doing too bad, but I’d love it if others got behind me and followed the journey hopefully to the top.’ Future potential sponsors can e-mail O’Meara at jpomeara@hotmail.co.uk or message on Facebook JP Omeara or Instagram JP99Omeara.
