MP brokers £100,000 funding for Royal British Legion Club Greenford from HS2 community fund
The Royal British Legion Club Greenford is to receive £100,000 to help pay for work on its roof and car park from the community fund set up by HS2.
The grant was facilitated by James Murry, the MP for Ealing North, and will be used to replace the main roof of the club’s building and to resurface the front car park. The hall roof is at least 81 years old and has deteriorated, causing water damage to the furnishings and floor. The condition of the tarmac on the car park surface has progressively worsened over the years with potholes and surface cracks.
In an attempt to mitigate the impact their works have been having on residents, HS2 has established a Community and Environment Fund to support local projects nearby. James Murray met HS2 about this fund last year to urge them to invest in projects in Greenford.
The MP then contacted local organisations in Greenford, including the Royal British Legion Club, to identify projects that could benefit from the funding. Since then, he has been following up with HS2, and last week received the great news about the money for the club.
Gary Webb, Vice-Chair of the Royal British Legion Club Greenford, said,
“This is fantastic news for the Royal British Legion Club Greenford. We had no idea about this funding until James got in touch about it, and we really appreciate him pushing HS2 to help make this happen. The club is more popular than ever for all sorts of events, all year round. This funding means we can repair the roof and get rid of the car park potholes, helping to make sure the club continues to be a popular place to meet in the heart of Greenford.”
James Murray added, “I am really glad the Royal British Legion Club Greenford will now be able to carry out much-needed works to their roof and car park. The club is now in its 90th year, and I hope this funding will help protect its place at the heart of the Greenford for the future.
“We all want the HS2 works to be over as quickly as possible, given all the disruption they have caused in the local area. In the meanwhile, I am grateful to HS2 for agreeing to this, and I am very glad that the RBL Club Greenford will now benefit from their community funding.”
HS2’s Community and Environment Fund is one of two funding programmes launched to help offset disruption caused by the construction of HS2 from London to West Midlands. James Murray is also working with other groups to put in applications, and would welcome any other interested groups getting in touch.
