Frances Lawrence, the wife of murdered Head Teacher Philip Lawrence, has been awarded an MBE for services to charity.

Her husband was attempting to defend one of his pupils who was being attacked by a gang led by Learco Chindamo at St George's Roman Catholic School in Maida Vale when he was stabbed to death in 1995.

Chindamo is serving a life sentence for the killing.

Before becoming the Head Teacher at St. George's, Mr Lawrence taught at St. Benedict's School on Eaton Rise where he met Frances.

Since her husband's death Mrs. Lawrence, who lives in Ealing, has campaigned against knife crime.

She set up the Philip Lawrence awards in 1997 to encourage good citizenship amongst the young.
