Refuse collectors in Ealing have been told they can't fly the flag during the forthcoming World Cup.

May Gurney - the company who operate the licence, has told workers that flags will be removed because of 'health and safety reasons' and 'inconsistency of the corporate identity'.

Doug Teesdale, Contract Manager of May Gurney, said:

" The corporate identity is not just the name and logo but a combination of graphic elements that work together to ensure consistency throughout the whole company, whether on letterheads, printed material, vehicles, workwear or equipment.

''We also take the Health and Safety of our workforce and customers seriously, and large or badly positioned flags could reduce visibility if attached close to a window or mirror, injure pedestrians or cyclists and potentially lead to a road accident.

''It is important that we convey a strong and coherent image on behalf of our customers and the general public. This consistency can only be achieved if everyone follows our guidelines correctly and these flags do not adhere to our professional brand or Health and Safety Policy.

''Therefore we have stated that any flags found on company vehicles will be removed.

Ealing North Labour MP Stephen Pound has described the decision as 'bonkers'.
