A 21-year-old man has been jailed for killing a grandfather from Greenford when he was driving at speed and over the alcohol limit.

Tarnjeet Multani of Park Avenue, Southall was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Monday, 29 April, to nine years’ imprisonment.

Shortly before 5:35am on 15 February 2022 his VW Polo car hit 59-year-old Kishore Kumar Gill near his home on Greenford Road by the junction with Bingley Road.

Mr Gill was pronounced dead at the scene and Multani didn’t stop until much further down the Greenford Road where he was arrested.

At his trial it emerged that he was over the proscribed limit for alcohol at the time of the collision and had been driving at a speed of at least 65mph in a 20mph zone.

Multani, who was 19 at the time, has been at a funeral the previous day and then had driven to the Greenford Road recycling centre to wait for friends to finish work. They met at 2am and drank whisky and listened to music until 5am when Multani, who by this time was nearly twice the legal limit, offered to take on of his friends home.

Workers arriving for the early morning shift at the recycling centre reported seeing a grey VW Polo speeding along the road and shortly afterwards Mr Gill was hit.

Multani claimed he was unaware of the speed limit on the road and was unsure what he had hit. He carried on for a few hundred yards before turning back to check.

He had already been found guilty on Friday, 22 March of causing the death by dangerous driving.

In a statement, the Gill family said, “Kishore Kumar Gill had nine children and 13 grandchildren with one on the way. He was healthy and fit, a regular gym goer and loved his family.

“It’s heart-breaking that his life was struck down at just 59 years old, doing what he’d done hundreds of times, crossing a road to get to work.

“His youngest grandchildren will never know him. Nothing can ever replace what we’ve lost as a family but this outcome at court gives him justice and we can try to live on and honour his memory.”

Detective Sergeant Nush Puvitharan, of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command, said, “Kishore Kumar Gill was taken away from his family thanks to the recklessness of Tarnjeet Multani. I hope today’s sentencing brings Mr Gill’s family some measure of comfort as they continue to mourn his loss.

“Multani was brought to justice thanks to a tenacious investigation by officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit supported by Forensic Collision Investigation Unit colleagues. Their work in establishing what happened and the speed of Multani’s car was crucial.”
