EXPERTS have advised students and businesses about new flexible degrees now available in Ealing, West London, from the comfort of a sofa outside the town hall.

As well as offering lower tuition fees, the new degrees from undergraduate to MBA studies offer maximum flexibility for students and businesses because of the way they are suited to meet modern requirements. They offer a blend of on campus and online learning, which means people can earn while they learn and not have the additional cost of going away full time to university.

It's not too late to start this October. Final places are available on the degrees from Arden University, which has its London study centre based within Ealing Green College, with the intake running until early October – unlike other universities and the end of the UCAS clearing process.

As part of efforts to highlight how there are now alternatives to the traditional way of getting a degree, Arden University put a sofa outside Ealing Hall on Friday 23rd September to encourage people to come and have a chat. The sofa will also be at Ealing Broadway shopping centre on Saturday 24th September, with further events planned over the next week.

Victoria Stakelum from Arden University said: ‘We called this week's events, the big blue sofa campaign because blended learning courses allow students to learn from the comfort of their own sofa as well as get useful face time with their tutors. It's a modern and flexible approach to university study.

‘At the Ealing Green study centre, undergraduates get face-to-face seminars two or three days a week during term times and then study online with full support from academics to fit around their life. And our MBA course involves one three-hour evening session a week over two years – so companies and individuals can get new skills without taking time out of work.'

She added: ‘You can get recognised degrees that will help your career and earning capacity while still being able to work and balance your home life without the additional cost and inconvenience of having to go away to study at a traditional university. Unlike other universities, it's still possible to join our degree courses for a little while longer, since our intake runs until early October. As part of the campaign, we're also offering prospective students the chance to win a tablet to help them with their online learning.'

The sofa will also be at the Town Square in Ealing Broadway shopping centre from 9am to 6pm on Saturday 24th September with free snacks also on offer.

free two-hour MBA taster seminar will also take place on Wednesday 28th September at Arden University's Ealing Green study centre with registration 6pm for a 6.30pm start and finish 8.30pm. This will be followed by a blended learning event on 29th September exploring the benefits of flexible learning from 5.30pm. Please go to www.arden.ac.uk/events for full information.

What is blended learning?

Blended learning offers students the chance to get their degree with a lot more flexibility than a traditional degree. This new way of learning and studying provides the best of face-to-face and online learning, and is available at Arden University’s Ealing study centre.

You attend regular classroom sessions at study centres with other students and the rest of the time you access materials and resources such as tutorials, lessons and exercises online, working at times that fit around your life. You upload coursework and assignments to a secure online zone with easy access to a tutor via Skype, email, webchat or phone.
