The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, is calling on local residents to dust off their bikes and join in a free family cycling event, the Mayor of London’s Sky Ride Ealing, coming to the borough on 18 July.

Thousands of people of all ages and cycling abilities are expected to participate in the mass bike ride, in which cyclists can take in the sights of the borough along roads and routes made free from traffic for the day.

Ealing will be transformed into a cyclists’ paradise complete with a festival area and roaming entertainment along a 12km route.

Four guided rides, led by experienced riders, bring cyclists to the start point from the neighbouring boroughs of Hounslow, Hillingdon, Hammersmith, Harrow and Brent.

Some 11,000 people took place in a similar event in Hounslow last year.

Sky Ride is being backed by a line-up of celebrities and pro-cyclists this year who will be attending various events across the country.

Mayor Johnson said:

“Sky Ride is a fantastic event, where everyone – no matter what age or cycling ability - can experience the fun of the bike, free from interference from cars. It will be a veritable festival of cycling in the heart of Ealing - celebrating the cleanest, greenest, handiest way of getting about town.
"A real cycling revolution is taking place in London and I want to say to Ealing residents that there has never been a better time to give pedal power a punt."

Sir Chris Hoy, Sky Ride Ambassador, said:

“Sky has a genuine opportunity to make a positive difference to people's lives by encouraging as many people as possible to get on their bikes. I had a fantastic time at last year’s events in Glasgow and London and it was great to see so many families enjoying all the activities and having fun."
