Harrow and Ealing Councils are working together with Network Rail and Transport for London to ease the traffic problems at Petts Hill bridge. They have drawn up a scheme which involves putting new pedestrian and cycle ways through the embankment on either side of the road. Then the existing pavement space will be used to create an extra traffic lane from Northolt towards Harrow. The junction of Northolt Road and Alexandra Avenue will be widened to allow for the new lane, and short sections of bus lane will be added before and after the bridge. Research shows that this new layout will shorten travel times for all road users and make bus journeys more reliable, by improving the traffic flow.

Police crime prevention officers have advised on the design, especially the passages, which will be wide, straight and well-lit. Cyclists and pedestrians will be separated to make sure both stay safe. Drivers from both directions will be able to see straight through the passages, and CCTV will add to the security. Transport for London will fund the scheme, which will cost about £3m.

Local residents and businesses will be consulted; anyone who would like to comment is asked to contact the New Harrow Customer Service Centre on 0845 225 2600 or email southharrow@harrow.gov.uk   For more information about the scheme, and to see drawings showing what it will look like, please visit www.harrow.gov.uk

The works will start with moving the many underground pipes and cables; this is planned for autumn 2004, and the main works should start in spring 2005, to be finished by early 2006.
