Plans for a Lidl and Home Bargains to replace a former Toys R Us store have been approved by councillors.

The Toys R Us site on the Bullsbridge Industrial Estate on Hayes Road, Southall, has been empty since the business went bust in 2018.

Members of Hounslow Council’s planning committee voted unanimously for the building to be allowed to host food retail businesses, and divide the large industrial unit, of 3,287 square metres, into two new stores.

According to the report, it is expected for the new stores to employ 40 members of full-time staff.

There will be 98 car parking spaces provided for the stores alongside electric vehicle charging points and cycle parking spaces.

Assessments done on the area near to the Western International Market found that the plans would not harm local traffic movements, and would not have an “unacceptable impact” on the viability of surrounding town centres in Hounslow, Hillingdon and Ealing.

Voting in favour of the plan, councillor Richard Foote said, “I think it’s a good position, a good site, it adds some benefits there of having a large empty building like that and new employment especially with the current situation, yeah it would be good, I’m all for it.”

Chair of the committee, Amritpal Mann, added, “I think this brings back into use a site that is in the middle of a commercial area, and something along what is being proposed, I think it would suit it down to the ground.”
