Plans to build a four-storey apartment block among Victorian and Edwardian town houses in Northfields have been scaled down.

Residents objected to proposals for the new build, at the site of A J Spares on Derwent Road, which was originally going to be 4 storey's high. They feared it would block light and compromise their privacy and didn't believe it to be an appropriate development.

If it went ahead and was approved by Ealing Council, the new build would have included 9 self-contained flats, and a roof winter garden.

However, following objections and after meetings between the local councillor, architect and developer the proposals have been reviewed.

The West block will now be reduced from a 4 storeys to 3 storey and the total number of flats cut from 9 to 7.

The applicant's representative said: ''We believe this reduction in scale to the development will improve the relationship between the proposal with its adjacent neighbours in relation to privacy, views and daylight access. We would welcome any comments to this amended design.''

Councillor David Millican welcolmed the alterations and said, '' Clearly this is a step in the right direction and merits some consideration.  As we know the site is very constrained and any new proposal would need to be sympathetic to its neighbouring environment. I have responded to the architect saying that I assume he will withdraw the current application and then re-submit this amended version so neighbours have a proper opportunity to examine it carefully and re-submit their comments. Many thanks to Ealing Fields Residents Association for taking such a pro-active stance with their objections and I will continue to keep you informed as I hear more.''

Consultation over the plans is set to end August 15.
