A bakery in Ealing has been handed the worst food hygiene rating possible after a number of concerns were raised by inspectors. Viona Cake Patisserie, on Station Parade across the road from Ealing Common tube station, was found to have made a number of violations including having “no food safety management system” and “no food safety training” in place for staff – resulting in it getting a zero rating overall, meaning ‘urgent improvement is required’.

The inspector’s report flags several issues ranging from how food is stored, handled, and prepared as not having food labels in English. Perhaps one of the more concerning details for customers is the inspector’s discovery of “mouse droppings” near food areas.

In the report, published as part of a Freedom of Information (FOI) request this month after the inspection took place in May, the inspector found the reason for the presence of pests is said to be because of a failure to clear up bits of food from underneath the Persian patisserie’s “units”.

The inspector has demanded a number of issues be addressed immediately including getting proper, food hygiene-approved cleaning products, installing a hand washing basin, addressing the cleaning issues he found “throughout” the shop, sealing up a hole in the window above the shop’s side door and calling pest control to get mice dealt with.

Despite the hygiene issues the bakery is well regarded receiving 4.5 stars on Google with 88 reviews. On the Viona Patisserie website, it says it is “a delicious Persian Patisserie that offers a great selection of Iranian sweets and pastries. All the delicious hand-made cakes, gateaux, and roulades are baked freshly on premises using only fresh and natural ingredients.”

The business now has to make improvements to its standards and be re-visited by the inspector if it wants to receive a better score, with the cost for another inspector visit running at £264. Viona Cakes is one of 32 restaurants, cafes, takeaways and shops that have been given a zero rating in Ealing – the highest number of any West London borough.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) has attempted to contact Viona Cakes on multiple occasions for comment but is yet to receive a response.
