The Log Cabin Community Mosaic Project is now well under way as the sensory garden beds are completed.

Local mosaic artist Rosanna Henderson has been working on the Log Cabin Mosaic Project since last August. She has been creating large cut out mosaics to enhance the sensory beds within the playground.

Late last year, 3 of her gardening friends volunteered to help design the sensory beds. Nita Davis, Gill Silvester and Krys Mackersie – all from the Brentham Estate, came up with a plan and suggested plants that would stimulate the senses of touch, sight and smell. Pitshanger Community Association awarded the Log Cabin a small grant towards the project which meant work could begin.

Since the beginning of this year Nita, Gill and Rosanna have been clearing 5 beds of weeds and on a snowy morning in February they went to Springbridge Nurseries to purchase soil to enrich the newly dug beds. A small working party was formed to transport the soil onto the beds – backbreaking but rewarding work!

There has since been regular trips to Smiths Nurseries to buy suitable plants. The planting has now all been completed and they must be the only ones who are pleased it is continually raining in order to settle the plants in! Both Springbridge and Smiths Nurseries have been extremely generous, giving special discounts for this very worthwhile project.

In the main playground area there is a large circular bed with colourful shrubs, perennials and grasses and another bed with herbs. There are also 3 raised beds in a peaceful, woodland area with ferns, various shade loving plants and spring bulbs.
Over 250 hours have been volunteered towards this project and Rosanna wants to thank Nita, Gill and Krys for all their hard work and generous contribution of time.

The first group of mosaics will be going up shortly which means Phase 2 will be completed. Rosanna then has 2 more rather ambitious mosaics to make in order to complete the project.
