RMT Union leader to talk about impact of rising cost-of-living
The RMT General Secretary, Mick Lynch, is to speak at a meeting organised by the Ealing Trades Union Council. The event, which takes place at 7.30pm on Wednesday 16 November at Ealing Green Church (W5 5QT) is entitled ‘Enough is Enough’ and described as a Solidarity Meeting which will address the impact of the rising cost of living. It comes as a large number of strikes have been taking place across the country including those held by Mr Lynch’s own union on the train and tube network in London. Nurses and university staff have also voted for strike action to prevent their pay declining in real terms with teachers set to be balloted soon. Also speaking will be Sarah Wooley, General Secretary of the Bakers Food & Allied Workers Union. The meeting will be chaired by Eve Turner and Jules Pallet of CWU Postal and Stefan Simms of the NEU Executive will also be appearing. Mick Lynch was elected as General Secretary of the RMT Union in 2021. By trade he is an electrician having left school at 16 in 1978 to serve his apprenticeship. He worked in engineering and construction until he was blacklisted for union activity. He then joined British Rail maintaining the train fleet at Eurostar becoming a union official for the workforce. His media profile has risen considerably during the strikes in 2022 as he made the case for his members. He has appeared on Question Time and Have I Got News for You.
