St John Ambulance will be giving free life saving demonstrations at Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre this month as part of a drive to raise awareness of the importance of first aid.

Volunteer first aiders from the nation’s leading first aid charity will be at the shopping centre on Monday 9 and 16 September teaching members of the public five easy to follow techniques which they can use to save a life in a major medical emergency.

The event is part of the charity’s annual Save a Life September campaign, now in its third year. Over the past two years more than 400 first aid demonstrations took place and 200,000 free pocket-sized first aid guides were distributed during the nationwide campaign.

This year St John Ambulance wants to reach even more people to equip them with vital first aid skills.

Research carried out by St John Ambulance before the campaign showed that up to 140,000 people* - more than 40% of the population of Ealing - die every year in situations where first aid could have given them the chance to live.

Len Bamber, Regional Director of London St John Ambulance, said: ‘Learning first aid is one of the single most important things you can do in your life. You never know when you may need it – at work, at home, in school, playing sport – you just don’t know.

'I know people doing their shopping are often in a rush but what could be more important than saving someone’s life? By taking just a few minutes to learn basic first aid skills, anyone can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved. ‘
