In the 16th century, Spanish conquistadores lead an expedition to discover El Dorado, taking South American natives as slaves. With a greed for gold and lust for power, Don Lope de Aguirre wrests control of the crew, and takes them on an obsessive and increasingly deadly voyage through the rainforest and down the river, as he descends into madness. Filmed in turbulent circumstances in Peru by the intrepid and unflappable director, whose films and documentaries have taken him to the ends of the Earth.

Nominations for best film and best performance, and winner of best cinematography at the German Film Awards, and from US critics, and also given the best foreign film prize from French critics, and the Grand Prix from Belgian critics.
