Scottish painter Nina Murdoch and Faber New Poet Tom Warner were guests of honour at St Augustine's inaugural arts evening.

The event was attended by dozens of local families and arts lovers who came to enjoy a cultured-filled evening of entertainment.

Nina Murdoch lead a short prize-giving and Tom Warner, who has delivered a number of poetry workshops to Year 5 and 6 students at the school, recited some of his own poems.

Together with Tom, pupils unveiled their school poetry book, which includes an eclectic collection of their most inspiring work. In addition, pupil designed calendars, postcards and crafts were available for purchase throughout the evening. Guests were then treated to an Indian cuisine buffet at the end of the evening.

Speaking about the poetry produced by the students, Tom Warner commented, “The girls are all really smart and talented. There were so many brilliant ideas, I think they have really helped to lift the poetry off the page – it is very different to how poetry can sometimes be studied in schools. Several of them have a natural, raw talent and I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a number of Faber New Poets in the making amongst them.”

Nina Murdoch, advised the students to, “Do your own work outside of school and follow your own style so it doesn’t just look like you’re following a school’s curriculum. The art work in this school is a great example, where the girls are all really exploring their own ideas. It just makes them stand out from all the other people wanting to pursue a career in art.”
