Your Walpole Labour Candidates

As the three Walpole candidates for Labour in the Local Elections on Thursday 22 May 2014, we want to continue to support and build on the work that has already been done by Labour. There is no time for complacency as more can be done to inject further life into the borough, which is home for all of us.

Your vote matters to us all, and our introductions below demonstrate why we feel we can represent you effectively by bringing together our diverse experience, personal qualities, and our vision for the future of Walpole Ward and Ealing.

Paul Conlan
Contact: 07808 930 917

Paul made Ealing his home 15 years ago. He was brought up in the Midlands and educated at Leeds University. As well as making his living for more than 20 years as a business and IT consultant, Paul has been actively involved in local community groups and campaigns, including as a school governor. His vision is for a lively cultural quarter, including a new cinema, good quality shops and restaurants in both Ealing and West Ealing.

Binda Rai

I am a lifelong Ealing resident, campaigner and former school governor of Elthorne Park High School. As a working mother and professional, I benefited from local employment with Ealing Council and the Ealing Gazette, but now it's time to give something back. As an economics graduate; a former BBC journalist and a public relations specialist for NHS Direct and the University of London , I have the skills to represent you effectively. Education, crime, health and economic development are all high on my agenda for Ealing.

Dr Gareth Shaw
Contact: 07789 914 379

A historian by trade, Gareth is heavily involved in the Ealing community. He was the campaign manager for the Save Our Hospital's campaign. He coordinated the community response against the threat to Ealing Hospital's A&E and led thousands of residents to march against Tory cuts. His top priority, if elected is to ensure that Ealing residents have access to the very best local health services.

Working for Walpole and Ealing

Life experience, energy, commitment and our desire to see a functional community in Ealing is what we offer as Labour candidates for Walpole Ward.
We see this functional society translate into low crime rates, low unemployment and a thriving education and health system serving the borough as well as improved housing.
Against a backdrop of unprecedented £87million Tory led government cuts to Ealing's budget and a £7million shortfall in Council Tax freeze subsidy, the Labour administration at the Town Hall has run the council responsibly in order to meet the needs of the community it serves.

What has the Labour Council achieved during its four years in office?

The Council has:* Frozen  Council Tax for the past four years, and if elected pledges to further freeze it for 2015/16.
* Not closed any children's centres, nor cut youth services.
* Invested in expanding our schools.
* Targeted its reducing budgets to serve the increasing number of elderly and physically and mentally disabled people.
* Invested £2 million more than the Tories promised in resurfacing our roads and pavements.
* Worked  with the  police to reduce crime rates and invested in CCTV  and alley gates in crime hotspots across the borough.
* Undertaken regeneration projects - housing and leisure facilities.
* Kept our libraries and leisure centres open, whilst modernising many of them.

Like other parts of the borough, Walpole can see the more immediate benefits of Labour's initiatives and these include:

* Labour investing £5 million plus in Walpole Park, including a learning centre, water garden and a new Eco-friendly woodland children's play centre.
* Labour will ensure that Ealing gets a new transport interchange at Ealing Broadway that befits the Queen of the Suburbs, as we are unhappy with Crossrail's current plans for the interchange.
* Labour will deliver a new cinema for Ealing having undergone a long process to make a compulsory purchase order for the former cinema site to ensure residents get a new cinema on the old cinema site in Ealing Broadway.
* Labour is delivering new street lighting for Uxbridge Road/Mattock Lane to keep residents safe and improve the environment.
* Labour is regenerating Sherwood Close and Dean Gardens Estate.
* Labour invested to support the award winning Ealing half-marathon, which starts and finishes in Lammas Park and sees the Ealing borough community  come together, as competitors, stewards and bystanders.
