Fears Raised That Demolition Of West Ealing Art Deco Building Is 'Done Deal'

No planning decision on building yet but rumours demolition contract already awarded

There are fears that plans for the demolition of the historical art deco facade of the former Woolworths are going ahead despite the fact that the site has yet to be granted planning permission.

1,159 people have signed a petition objecting to proposals to destroy the 1926 façade on The Broadway.

A2Dominion own the building and want to build 120 flats on the site which is not within a Conservation Area or is a nationally listed heritage building. An application to LBE for local heritage listing was submitted in December 2017 but campaigners so far haven't heard anything regarding the application.

Concerned locals say rumours are that the contract for bulldozing the art deco façade at 96 – 102 Broadway W13 0SY has already been commissioned.

The next two Ealing Council Planning Committee Meetings are scheduled for 21 November and 12 December 2018. It’s possible that the A2Dominion Planning Application (Ref:182180FUL) might be discussed in one of these meetings. The application is now some six months old.

West Ealing Neighbours (WEN) has attempted to have the façade examined by a structural engineer. In order to do this, WEN needed access to the building. Poundland, prior to its closure, could not provide this and A2Dominion has ignored WEN’s request for access.

An Ealing Council spokesperson said, ''We can confirm that a planning application has been received for this site and is still pending decision. Consideration of the heritage asset as identified in the neighbourhood plan is part of the application assessment. The current proposal does not include its retention.''
