Local group not slow to blow its own trumpet
July 19, 2023 A new wind orchestra has been formed in the Ealing area and it is seeking new members. The response to a try out session held last month has been such that it is now planned to run two semesters’ worth of rehearsals and concerts starting in early October. These will be timed to coincide with term time at The University of West London (UWL) so students can participate. Along with the London College of Music, UWL has provided a venue for the group to meet and the use of percussion instruments. This support will continue with a rehearsal space being provided at UWL. The group intends to meet there regularly on Wednesday evenings from 7pm and will always be looking for locals who want to come and play. The idea is that it is a community venture for adults but under 18s are welcome to come along if they bring a responsible adult with them. The music that the orchestra will play will be a mix of film music, arrangements from musicals, as well as classic wind band music from all over the world, a lot of which uses folksong as a starting point. They are particularly keen to encourage people from traditionally underrepresented groups to join and write music for the orchestra to perform. One of the organisers of the Ealing Wind Orchestra is Dave Gordon-Shute who is as a professional tuba player and teacher. He performs with the orchestra for Birmingham Royal Ballet and is a founder member of Onyx Brass. He says, “More and more though, over the last 15 years, I have enjoyed conducting wind orchestras. 2023 sees me conducting the wind orchestras at the Royal College of Music, the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the Hertfordshire County Wind Sinfonia and Eton College. This venture is part of my wish to be able to work more locally and invest in the wonderful community of Ealing where my family have been resident for about 15 years. I became a funeral Celebrant about 7 years ago which was also part of this desire to be amongst local Ealing families. “ If people are interested in joining, woodwind (including saxophones), brass (including euphoniums) and percussion players are needed. The best contact to use is ealingwindorchestra@gmail.com.
