The students, from University of West London’s Professional Skills Academy (PSA) who studied for their Chef and Restaurant Diplomas and Apprenticeships, were watched by family and friends, as well as the Mayor of Ealing Harbhajan Kaur Dheer, as they took to the stage in the University’s new Weston Hall.

Prize sponsors included industry bodies, including the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and the Craft Guild of Chefs, alongside local restaurants Brilliant and Friends and other hospitality companies. Steve Munkley, Executive Head Chef of the Royal Garden Hotel, presented the prizes and congratulated the winners on their achievements.

Janet Rowson, Head of the Professional Skills Academy, said, ‘Our students have worked really hard for the prizes and awards they received today. I know that their experience has been an enjoyable one, and they will feel encouraged to take the next steps into employment or to further their studies with us at the University.’

The afternoon featured a performance by London College of Music musical theatre students. There was also presentation of a cheque for £608.28 to Nicole Lavell, representing the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. The money was raised through a cake sale organised by PSA students.

Gita Lad, who won a prize for her cake at Cake International, received the Chris Read Memorial Cup. She said, ‘I have loved the courses I’ve done, what we’ve been taught has been amazing. The skills we have learned were so useful and we had time to develop them over the thirty weeks until they became natural.’
