A man has been jailed for life for attempted murder after stabbing his victim as he worked on a car in Southall.

Allan Powell, 54 of Brooklyn Way, West Drayton, was ordered to serve a minimum of 11 years with two years' imprisonment to run concurrently for possessing an offensive weapon.

On Saturday, 31 August 2013 at around 12.30hrs the victim, a 50-year-old man, was working on his car in Green Walk, Southall. He was under the bonnet leaning over the engine and as he stood up, he felt a push from behind.

The push was quite forceful, causing the victim to fall backwards onto the ground. He immediately noticed Powell standing beside his car holding a large knife. The victim then realised he was bleeding from the chest as there was blood all over his T-shirt.

As the victim lay on the ground, Powell tried to stab him again. However, the victim kicked out with his legs and arms and Powell ran off.

The victim managed to get to his feet and stumble to the front door where he called for his partner who dialled 999.

London Ambulance Service attended and began treatment, including resuscitation due to the victim’s deteriorating condition. He was taken to a London hospital for further treatment.

Officers attended Powell's home where he was arrested and later charged with attempted murder.

He was found guilty by a unanimous verdict of attempted murder on Thursday, 19 June.

Detective Sergeant Dave Coward, from Ealing borough, said: “This was a serious attack which caused life-threatening injuries to the victim and has had a major impact on him. He has shown great courage throughout this investigation.

"Powell's lengthy sentence sends a clear and powerful message to everyone carrying and using knives that we will find you, prosecute you and put you in prison."
