A gunman - just 16 at the time - who fired bullets randomly into a crowd  in West Ealing has been jailed for twelve years.

Mahad Hersi, 17, from Hayes shot an innocent bystander in both legs when violence flared up between rival gangs.

The fight broke out at a party in Island Spice takeaway about 2am on December 16 last year.

Hersi fired up to five bullets into the crowd, leaving a 16-year-old - who wasn't a gang member - with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Hersi later threw away his weapon and clothes but sent boastful texts to friends.

Police traced him by a letter found in the jacket, and discovered incriminating text messages on his phone.

Hersi, a member of a gang known as 'Purple Hayes', was jailed for twelve years at Blackfriars Crown Court.

He will be on an extended licence when released - the judge said he continued to be a danger to the public.
