Virendra Sharma MP has ‘pledged to pick’ as local environmental group launches the Great Big Southall Clean-up fortnight.

It is part of an awareness raising initiative by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy which is taking place from 28 May to 13 June.

Everyone is asked to pledge to do their bit to clear up the litter that blights our open spaces and help the charity achieve a million miles of litter-picking.

This year’s campaign comes as the charity has reported a massive increase in the number of people who have started litter-picking during the various lockdowns. It has seen the number of #LitterHeroes grow by a third in less than 12 months.

Locally, the Litter Action Group for Ealing Residents has organised the Great Big Southall Clean-up set up to coincide with Keep Britain Tidy's national campaign. The group's aim is to litter pick as many as possible of the 376 roads in Southall that are not cleaned daily by the Council's contractors.

The launch event was led by the Ealing Southall MP on the Bank Holiday Monday at Manor House Grounds in the constituency, where local volunteers were buoyed by glorious weather.

Virendra Sharma MP said: “What better way is there to spend this gorgeous bank holiday than by improving our local environment with a group of highly enthusiastic activists? We have all spent a lot more time in our local area in the past year and have come to realise just how important our local park or green space is for our mental and physical health.

“We need to care for these spaces and the Great Big Southall Clean-up is an opportunity for everyone to take a small action that, collectively, can make a big difference.

“I want to thank LAGER Can, the Southall Lions and all of the volunteers who gave up some of their Bank Holiday Monday for an amazing cause, the conservation of our local environment in Ealing Southall.”

You can pledge to get involved today by contacting the Litter Action Group for Ealing Residents and Cathy Swift via LAGERCan2020@gmail.com.
