A play by acclaimed British playwright Peter Whelan is to be premiere on 26 January at The Questors Theatre in Ealing over eight years after it was written. It was never performed in the writer’s lifetime and only resurfaced last year after a chance conversation between his widow Ffrangcon Price and director John Davey.

When asked why she decided to offer the play to The Questors for its posthumous world premiere Ffrangcon stated that, “We’ve been members of this theatre for fifty years. Peter directed here, acted here. It was a big part of his life.”

Set in 1941 and to the backdrop of the Luftwaffe bombings over industrial areas of the Midlands, the play explores attitudes to war and conflict.

Born in 1931, Whelan wrote 17 plays including seven collaborations with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

His best known play was The Herbal Bed (1996), which dealt with a scandal involving the daughter of William Shakespeare. The original production starred Joseph Fiennes, Teresa Banham and David Tennant. The play won Whelan the Lloyds Bank Playwright of the Year award.
