Developer Appeals Against West Ealing Tower Refusal |

Plan for 20-storey tower on Manor Road had been blocked by council
The developer of a scheme to build a 20 storey tower near West Ealing railway station has appealed against the council’s decision to refuse permission. Southern Grove and Thames Valley Metropolitan Housing saw their proposal narrowly rejected by six votes to five. The appeal was widely expected to take place by residents campaigning against the development. Officers had recommended that the scheme dubbed 55 West should be approved by the committee, and did not believe it would negatively impact the area. But councillors voting against the scheme feared the height and scale of the building would dominate the local area and that the ‘affordable homes’ would not be available to those who need them the most. It was pointed out that the lack of social rent provision would set an unwelcome precedent. The scheme which attracted a huge level of local opposition with over 2,600 objections being submitted would see the demolition of existing buildings at 51-56 Manor Road and 53-55 Drayton Green Road and the construction of a new structure over a basement with part 12 and part 20 storeys. There would be 144 flats all of which would be classed as affordable. The scheme would be directly above West Ealing train station which is due to receive the Crossrail service when launched.
