The majority of staff at Northfields station will be relocated from next week as part of Transport For London's (TfL) modernisation programme.

TfL say the 'Fit for the Future' plan, originally announced in 2013, is one of the biggest shake-ups to the Underground in a generation. They claim it is about ' embracing technology' to make the service more 'personal' for customers, making staff more visible and available to 'provide help where it is needed'.

Staff at stations throughout London have been moved from ticket offices and back rooms to out in ticket halls and on gate lines – with more on platforms.

Station administration and logging can now be done on hand-held devices, making staff more visible at ticket machines and in ticket halls. TfL say the result is a 40 per cent reduction in the time spent on administration tasks.

Last year Northfields ticket office was closed, and from next week, most of the workers previously based at the station will be rostered across a group of 7 different locations as required.

Currently, two members of staff are on duty for the majority of time at Northfields. Once the new staffing model is introduced in April, TfL say this will continue.

A poignant message left at the station from the tube workers reads:

'' Thank you for making our job a pleasant and enjoyable place to be. From all the staff at Northfields' It's been emotional'.

The staffing changes start on 3rd April.
