A Southall business has been ordered to pay more than £4,000 for fly-tipping after cameras caught staff dumping rubbish locally..

Tarique Hamid who ran Nehanas Kitchen, based on South Road, Southall, pleaded guilty to six offences of fly-tipping in a nearby residential street, at Ealing Magistrates' Court on 18 March 2019. The business was ordered to pay a £3,000 fine, £1,070 in costs, and a £50 victim surcharge.

The prosecution followed an investigation by the council’s enforcement officers, who caught staff from the business fly-tipping commercial waste on six occasions in August last year. CCTV had been installed at the location to monitor the area following reports of fly-tipping from residents.

The CCTV footage captured staff coming out of Nehanas Kitchen, walking and sometimes running across a busy main road to dump their waste in a nearby residential road opposite the business.

The council had been paying £150 per day, over the six days, to clear rubbish dumped at the location. Since that time, council contractors have found the street to be clean and clear during their daily inspections of the area.

Councillor Mik Sabiers, cabinet member for environment and highways said: “I am happy that we have secured this prosecution of an irresponsible business in Southall who clearly thought it was above the law.

“Fly-tipping is an irresponsible and criminal act. We will not tolerate it in any form and we will prosecute the people behind it. Dumped rubbish is unpleasant for local people, bad for the environment and costs us tens of thousands of pounds per year to clean up.

“We work across the borough to crack down on fly-tipping and have made it much easier to report fly-tippers so I encourage anyone who witnesses such behaviour to report it so we can take strong action.”

The council launched the Cleaner Southall campaign last autumn specifically to prevent the dumping of rubbish in Southall Broadway and Southall Green. It involves working with residents, businesses and the wider community to tackle the problem by making it easier to report any witnessed incidents.

Pictures of offenders caught on camera fly-tipping are being displayed locally to help people recognise alleged offenders and ensure they are fined. Increased enforcement is also operating in the area.

The business is now recorded as being closed.
