West Ealing was brought to a standstill for several hours yesterday (Wed 1st May) after a man appeared on the roof of a building apparently threatening to jump.

The incident began shortly after 4pm when two ambulance crews a duty officer and a hazardous response team were sent to the scene above Ladbrokes bookies.

Leeland Road was sealed off and Uxbridge Road closed and traffic diverted.

Police, fire and ambulance officers were all in attendance and the police helicopter called out.

At times the man appeared dangerously close to the edge of the building.

Crowds gathered and police negotiators spoke to him and after nearly five hours he was persuaded to come off the roof.

Police say the situation ended peacefully at around 9pm. The man was brought down and checked by ambulance officers.

A police spokesperson said:

'' Police were called to reports of a man on a roof in The Broadway, West Ealing. After a number of hours, the man, aged 30, came down from the roof and was checked by London Ambulance staff. He was subsequently arrested and has since been detained under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act.''
