Perivale and Hanwell libraries have been given a new lease of life following major refurbishment and upgrade works.

Perivale Library has already unveiled its new look while Hanwell Library will open its doors on Tuesday, 2 July.

Refurbishments costing £400,000 included a new self-service system and automatic entrance doors while much of the building’s traditional wooden features were maintained. New books were also added to the library’s collection.

The £900,000 refurbishments at Hanwell Library involved modernising the building alongside careful restoration of its historic features. Original light fittings were recreated and a giant mural of the locks at Hanwell has been installed on the back wall.

The children’s library and the study area have been expanded, and two new meeting rooms with kitchenettes have been added and are avaliable for hire. More computers have been installed, along with a new WIFI connection and a lift to the first floor for better accessibility.

Cabinet member for community services and safety, Councillor Ranjit Dheer, said: “We are committed to investing in our local libraries to make them better and more accessible for the whole community. We’ve created fantastic new environments at Perivale and Hanwell libraries while maintaining the heritage features of both buildings. I hope all local people will make the most of this free service.”

All libraries in Ealing offer free book borrowing and internet access. Residents can also check book stocks, reserve or renew books online, and eBooks can be downloaded for free from the elibrary at www.ealing.gov.uk/libraries

Hanwell Library will be officially opened on Saturday, 13 July. The event will run from 10am-4pm and will also include a range of family activities.
