Residents in Perivale are being urged to attend consultation meetings over revised plans for a Hi rise tower block development behind the iconic Hoover building.

Tesco Perivale sold the petrol station at the rear of the site to developer Amro Living, which originally submitted plans to Ealing Council for a 305-home “build-to-rent” development called The Wiltern.

However, more than 2,000 people signed a petition against the plans which they say would ruin views of the iconic Grade II listed art deco former factory on the A40 being.

The former Hoover factory’s main building opened in 1932 to a design by architects Wallis, Gilbert and partners. The building was sold in 1989 to Tesco, which built a supermarket behind it.

Locals say the proposed block is ''far too high'' and not at all in keeping with the local residential housing which is mostly 1930's semi detached houses.'

In its original planning application Amro said: “the development will breathe new life into the site, currently occupied by a petrol station. The Wiltern aims to establish a new community, renting high quality, purpose-designed and well managed homes, with facilities of exceptional quality, stitched into the fabric of the surrounding neighbourhood.”

Amro held their first round of consultation events in 2018. Following criticism over the scheme the developers ''are pleased to announce revised proposals for The Wiltern which feature a significantly lower building and a development with a reduced density overall.''

The Wiltern website now advertises '280' Build to Rent homes - 25 less than originally planned- comprising studio, 1, 2 and 3-bed apartments, including an affordable housing provision to be agreed with Ealing Council. The architecture is described as a 'high quality Art Deco' celebrating the context of the Hoover Building.

Local residents are being urged to find out more about the revisions but objectors say they suspect the height and density of the building has not been sufficiently reduced.

Consultations will be taking take place at Royal Nawaab, Hoover Building 7, Western Avenue on
Friday 10 January 4-8pm and Saturday 11 January 10- 2pm.

We asked for further detail about the proposals and Natasha Kendall speaking on behalf of The Wiltern Consultation/Amro told us:

'' The applicant has been working hard with residents, key stakeholders and Ealing council to develop revised plans and these will be shown at the public exhibitions on Friday and Saturday.

''The applicant is committed to ensuring that local people are the first to see the revised plans and provided with the opportunity to give their feedback.''
