August has been a huge month for the newly formed Hanwell Rugby Football Club. Not only have they continued their free community touch rugby sessions throughout the summer (7pm Elthorne Park, Hanwell - all welcome), but this has been supported with their pre-season training - which as with every rugby club, is always hard work.

August has also been the month where the club finally unveiled the jersey they will wear this season. Sporting a menacing version of Hanwell's Phoenix logo along with the motto; Nec Aspera Terrent (“Difficulties be Damned”), the shirt is predominantly black, with green trim...earning the shirt the nickname, "Green Fire" amongst the players.

In that same week, the club played their first ever game, a friendly against local league rivals and friends of the club, The Whitton Lions.
The game was played in the spirit associated with rugby and resulted in Hanwell securing their debut win 22-5. Hanwell scrumhalf Craig Carroll was pick of the players with a man of the match display - scoring 3 tries.

Nigel Bakhai, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Elthorne ward has supported Hanwell RFC from the initial idea and has been a source of constant advice when the club's committee have required advice on local issues. He said about Hanwell RFC;

"This is a great start for Hanwell Rugby Club and I hope this will be the first of many victories in the future. Their success in setting up the club is testimony to their passion and commitment to their sport and their community."

We at the club thank him for his hard work and advice.

The club cannot rest on their laurels however, with the next game due against London Japanese, followed by an away fixture to our friends, The Ealing Exiles at the home of Ealing Trailfinders RFC. We hope that this will become a regular fixture between Ealing and Hanwell - and that the local community will get behind both teams in the future.
