Frank Pocock was appointed to be Hanwell Library's first librarian in 1905.

He worked there until he enlisted in the Army in 1915 and died fighting near the Somme on the 25th March 1918.

To honour his memory and commemorate the centenary of his death the Hanwell Library Users Group have devised an event to take place in Hanwell Library on Saturday 24th March.

The morning will commence at 10.30 with the reading of a poem  by another librarian, Charles Hocking (Acton Library) who survived the war.
At 10.45 members of the Rainbow Poetry Group will read some of their poems.
The morning will end with a talk by Dr Jonathan Oates, Ealing's Archivist and Local History Libriarian, on the life and times of Frank Pocock.

Lunch
The afternoon starts at 14.15 with songs of the periood sung by Extra Mondays.
At 14.45 Dr Oates will repeat his talk on the life and times of Frank Pocock.
15.45 Philip Jackson, local resident and actor, willl read a selection of First World War poetry
16.15 The Last Post

 

The Hanwell Library Users Group grew out of a successful capaign waged in 2011 to stop the Council closing Hanwell Library down. In 2012 the Council decided to spend in the region of £900,000 on refurbishing the building back to its former glory.
