Hanwell Carnival has recently awarded £1500 worth of grants to local charities. The money is from a small surplus that the event made last year.

Charities that took part in the carnival were invited to submit applications stating what sum they would like (to a maximum of £300) and what they would spend it on.

The Carnival has a long tradition with fund raising; it was founded at the end of the 1800s specifically to raise funds for the Cottage Hospital (now Ealing Hospital). Before the days of the NHS this fund raising was even more vital than it is today. (Mind you only the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the Wal-Mart supermarket chain and the Indian Railways directly employ more people than the NHS. What does that tell us?)

The successful charities this year are: Ealing Hospital League of Friends(£260 for a Panini grill and knives), BLP Art Collective (£150 for arts and craft materials for artists with learning disabilities),Pets In Need (£200 for cat pens), St Mary's Church (£300 for equipment for their youth club, crèche and playgroup), Hanwell Neighbourly Care (£210 for Ealing Community Transport to take older people on outings to country parks or the seaside) Choices Ealing (£300 for 5 pushchairs for parents in financial need) and Olde Hanwell Traditional Karate Club (£82 for equipment).

Hanwell Carnival takes place in Elthorne Park on Saturday June 21st.
