Party held to mark milestone for live music venue in community centre
November 28, 2023 The Hanwell Cavern, the live music venue in the basement of the Hanwell Community Centre, held a party this Friday evening (24 November) to celebrate its fifth birthday. It was the 23rd pop-up live music event held at the venue and tickets sold out within a day to hear long-time supporters of the Hanwell Cavern, singer/song writer Matt Wyatt and The Bats of Ealing as well as a newcomer solo artist Loose Puppet/George Hammond. The team of dedicated volunteers was joined by three Hanwell Councillors, two Ealing Cabinet members and many other supporters and guests. The sound engineering was provided by the expertise of students from the University of West London. Turning the space into an area for live music performance has built upon the music heritage of the Grade II listed building and provided a platform for local musicians, song writers and artists of all ages to show off their talent. It has also helped to promote what is on offer at the Hanwell Community Centre, engaging the community further with music, history, social and architectural heritage. Bands and musicians that played gigs or rehearsed at the centre in the past include The Who, Deep Purple, Procol Harum, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Gene Vincent, The Animals, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many others. The volunteer team has collaborated with other charitable and community organisations such as The Hanwell Hootie, Hanwell Carnival, The Ealing Club, Hanwell Town Football Club and others to promote music further in the Borough. Polly Knewstubb, Labour Councillor for Hanwell Broadway Ward and Ealing Cabinet Member for Thriving Communities said, “Thank you to all involved for creating a platform for music in the local community. “We have such a music heritage in Hanwell - it feels it is really coming back to life - it is amazing. Thank you to the Hanwell Cavern team for being at the heart of the community and for all the support given to Ealing Council in building the Ealing Culture Manifesto which is the basis for Ealing bidding to becoming the London Borough of Culture in 2025.’ Hanwell Community Centre is located in Westcott Crescent, W7 1PD. It is a Grade II listed building surrounded by a registered Village Green “The Cuckoo Park”. Both building and park were registered by Hanwell Community Centre Consortium as an asset of Community Value.
