100 bags of construction waste removed from nature reserve
December 28, 2023 When someone decided to leave the entrance to a local nature reserve strewn with concrete from a construction site a group of volunteers swung into action to remove the flytip before Christmas. On the 16 December volunteers from Friends of Grove Farm and Good Gym Ealing worked together to remove the rubble from the Grove Farm Local Nature Reserve in Sudbury Hill. The flytippers had spread the equivalent of 100 bags of concrete at various points around the reserve, choosing to throw 1 kg pieces into hedges and spilling out the waste in as wide an area as possible. Ealing Council had been notified of the fly tipping that is believed to have taken place over several days, however GEL (Greener Ealing Ltd) Ealing Council’s waste collection firm, was only able to remove the bagged waste from the nature reserve, leaving the rest of the fly tip to the volunteers to bag up for removal. By the middle of the week GEL had managed to collect the waste that the volunteers had moved to the roadside for them, taking some additional bags that had been fly tipped post clean up. The Friends of Grove Farm said afterwards, “Unfortunately fly tipping of DIY waste and rubbish in Ealing is an issue not only in parks and nature reserves like Grove Farm but the borough as a whole. It's up to all the residents of Ealing to work together to solve this problem. If you see someone fly tipping, please report it to the council. "This can now be easily done through the ‘Love Clean Streets’ app on your phone or via the council website. Also please only hire traders with Tier 2 Waste Transfer Licenses to remove your waste, or you could be prosecuted if they illegally dump it. For your own protection you should also take a photograph of the licence, in case the waste is subsequently dumped. Along with Ealing residents, we are thankful for the support of other volunteering groups such as Good Gym Ealing, Friends of Horsenden Hill or LAGER Can. We wouldn’t be able to accomplish as much as we do.”
If you would like to support Friends of Grove Farm and the Local Nature Reserve with a donation so that it can continue its work, you can give via its website.
