A couple who have dedicated 26 years to looking after teenagers, have been named Ealing Council’s Foster Carers of the Year.

Harriette and Ennis Frederick received their accolade at the council’s annual fostering awards held on Saturday, 12 November.

Councillor Binda Rai, cabinet member for children and young people, told the audience on Saturday how Harriette and Ennis have looked after dozens of teenagers, from different backgrounds, religions and ethnicities.

She added: "They have always treated each young person as an individual and welcomed them into their home with open arms. There have been challenging times, as teenagers can be difficult whoever they are, but they have been able turn them around and have excellent relationships even now, with those they have fostered over the years.”

Harriette is now an ambassador for fostering for Ealing and joint chairwoman of Ealing Foster Carers’ Association and she is very much looked up to and admired by other foster carers.

Councillor Rai explained that Harriette is a great mentor for both new and experienced foster carers: "She is always going the extra mile, organising day trips, social events and helping to train people preparing to become foster carers.”

The couple have provided excellent care and support for all the teenagers they have looked after, helping some to turn their lives around and become successful young adults in education, employment or with families of their own.

Harriette, said: “We were delighted and a little surprised to receive this award. We really enjoy being foster carers and being able to make a real difference to the lives of young people. There are times when it is hard, but the rewards are far greater.. There are so many children and young people that need help in the local community and to be able to change children’s lives and help prepare them for the future is an amazing thing.”

The annual awards ceremony is held by the council to recognise and reward its foster carers for their hard work and commitment. This year’s event was held the Double Tree Hilton Hotel in Ealing and was hosted by cabinet member for children and young people, Councillor Binda Rai.

The event was opened by the Deputy Mayor of Ealing, Councillor Simon Woodroofe and attended by more than 160 people. Foster carers received a certificate and those who have achieved five, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years of service were also presented with specially engraved glassware.

Councillor Rai said: “I would like to thank all our wonderful foster carers for their hard work and dedication. This event is such an inspiration and demonstrates how our foster carers can transform the lives of the children and young people in their care.

“The need for more foster carers in Ealing has been brought into sharp focus with the arrival in London of children from the Jungle camp in Calais. Ealing has already welcomed seven children from Calais in recent weeks and placed them with foster carers but we need more people to come forward and would urge anyone who would like to know more about becoming a foster carer to come along to one of our information sessions.”
