A shisha lounge on Hanger Lane has been fined, after council officers found customers smoking in enclosed premises.

Under legislation introduced in 2007, it is illegal to smoke in all public enclosed, or substantially enclosed, public spaces.
The council has received 17 complaints from residents about shisha bars in the past year.

Officers carried out an unannounced inspection at Fawanees as part of a joint operation with HM Revenues and Customs and police licensing officers. They witnessed customers smoking cigarettes and shisha pipes inside the premises.

They initially gave the manager of Fawanees information and advice on smoke free legislation, but when they followed up with subsequent unannounced visits and found more customers smoking inside the premises, they referred the owners and manager for prosecution.

The owners and manager of Fawanees pleaded guilty in Ealing Magistrates Court on 3 October and were ordered to pay more than £19,000 in fines and costs.

Councillor Ranjit Dheer, cabinet member for community services and safety, said: “Our officers work closely with local businesses to help them to operate within the law and they give lots of advice and support to help them to be well-run and safe.

“Smoking in an enclosed public space is illegal. All businesses know this and most obey the law. Fawanees considered themselves to be above the law and that is something that we will not tolerate. I am pleased to see such a hefty fine being handed down to them. It shows that both the council and the courts are serious about enforcement and punishing those who openly break the rules.”
