Two Ealing women triumphed over their Hillingdon neighbours last weekend taking top positions in the Hillingdon 10k.

Despite treacherous conditions on Easter Monday thanks to Storm Katie, Leanne Smith and Catherine Gunnerwicht who are both team members of the Ealing Southall and Middlesex (ESM) running club, secured first and second positions in the race.

Leanne, a hospital dietician, completed the 10K in a remarkable 46:57, and Catherine, a care manager, wasn't far behind at 48:46.

Catherine said she hadn't realised she was in second place until she was told by a club-mate who was spectating.

She said: ''That gave me a huge boost and determination to keep my place, so I was gutted when I was overtaken in the last 100 metres by a woman! But it turned out she was doing the half marathon.''

Leanne led the race from start to finish is overjoyed with her win.

She says: '' Because of the weather my trainers were actually soaked when I started the race so it wasn't the best of conditions. I was just trying to keep up with one of my team-mates throughout and gave it my best shot. I was just really happy to be the first woman to finish.''

Congratulations to Leanne and Catherine!
