A race will take place in September in memory of Andrew Carter who collapsed and later died following the 2014 Ealing Half Marathon.

The Andrew Carter Memorial Mile is part of The Mile Series, created by the organisers of the Ealing Half Marathon, and will take place will take place at 11am on Saturday 2nd September 2017 in Ealing’s Lammas Park in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young for The Tom Clabburn Fund.

This event was set up in tribute to Andrew Carter who collapsed following a cardiac arrest, aged just 33, as he completed the Ealing Half Marathon in 2014. He passed away peacefully a few days later. As a young, fit and healthy man who loved all sports, Andrew’s family is keen to support the registered charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), in order that testing can identify those at risk and to allow further research into cardiac conditions of young people who appear fit and healthy.

The Andrew Carter Memorial Mile is open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities wishing to complete the one-lap mile around Lammas Park. Whether to attempt a PB on the fast course or to enjoy a Saturday morning stroll with friends, it is a great opportunity for the community to come together in support of this fantastic cause.

The event is free of charge, but participants are kindly asked to make a donation to the collection tin on the day or donate online to the Tom Clabburn Fund.

As the local representative for CRY UK, the Tom Clabburn Fund has raised more than £150,000 for CRY since 2008, enabling more young people to benefit from heart screenings, and it has also supported CRY’s research programme and purchased an echocardiogram for the charity.

Sandra Courtney, Race Director, commented: “We are honoured to host The Andrew Carter Memorial Mile in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young for The Tom Clabburn Fund. We are hoping that the event will help to increase awareness of the valuable work these charities do, and raise important funds to enable further testing and research into cardiac conditions in the young.

“We look forward to seeing many members of the local Ealing Community take part, as we have a fabulous community spirit here. The Mile event is a great precursor to the Ealing Half Marathon, which takes place just a few weeks later, so the borough will be in full ‘race’ mode and I know people will jump at the chance to run around Lammas Park together for such a worthy cause.”

Andrew’s father Colin Carter, said: “A big thank you to all who will be running the memorial mile in tribute to our amazing son Andrew. Your generous donations will help CRY Charity to fund research and testing of young people for potential cardiac conditions.”

The Andrew Carter Memorial Mile takes place on Saturday 2nd September at 11am. Race numbers can be collected on the day from 10:30am onwards. Runners should meet inside the main gate of Lammas Park at the junction of Culmington Road and Beaconsfield Road.
