Restaurant owner fined after staff caught on CCTV flytipping

A Southall business has been fined after pleading guilty to dumping rubbish on the pavement.

Shabeelle Ltd, the company which owns Shabeelle restaurant, 33 Featherstone Road, Southall appeared in court last week and pleaded guilty to seven offences of fly-tipping.

A member of staff was caught on CCTV leaving more than 30 bags of rubbish on the pavement outside the premises between 21 and 27 April.

The court was told the staff member responsible for dumping the waste has since been dismissed and the restaurant has now bought refuse bags from the council under a valid commercial waste contract. Shabeelle Ltd was fined £150 for each offence, a £20 victim surcharge, and ordered to pay costs of £800.82, a total of£1,870.82.

In a separate case, Warsame Jaamac, owner of Shine Café, 1 Dudley Road, Southall, also attended court. He entered a guilty plea after failing to comply with a Notice served requiring him to supply information about the disposal of his business waste.

Jaamac was fined £300, and ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge and the council’s £424.31 costs making a total of £754.31.

Both hearings were held at Ealing Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 4 December.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “Let this be a clear, unequivocal message to those who choose to ignore the law. Fly-tipping is illegal and unwelcome, and will not be tolerated in our borough. Each bag of illegally dumped rubbish costs the council a lot of money to collect and there are no excuses for this type of behaviour.

“We are committed to making Ealing a clean place for all our residents. The council readily provides businesses with accessible information and advice on how to properly dispose of their waste.”
