The by-election was held after the passing of Councillor Tej Ram Bagha in September. Councillor Bagha was first elected as a councillor in 1994 and became the 50th mayor of Ealing in 2014. He lived in the borough for more than 50 years.

Liberal Democrats say there was a swing in the vote from Labour to the Liberal Democrats, which they claim indicates dissatisfaction with the Council. The turnout also fell from local elections in May.

Lib Dem candidate Nigel Bakhai who doubled his vote said: “Liberal Democrats spoke to many people who said that they were starting to be fed up with Labour who seem happy to sell off the Southall Police station and leave our streets dirty. With the large increase in violent crime Southall needs an operational police station and police on the beat to reduce crime.''

The Labour party has control over Ealing Council with 57 seats. While Conservative Party and Liberal Democrats have 8 and 4 respectively.
