Gillian Spragg Digital Mozart Festival

Talented young Ealing musicians were part of a team that presented The Digital MozArt at the international Mozilla Festival, which attracted more than 2,000 people from all over the world.

The musical dice throwing game was created by West London Arts Scene, as part of the Ealing Autumn Festival as a 21st century digital update to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s clever game to compose a rare piece of music in the 18th century.

The Digital MozArt was one of the few musically focused events at MozFest, held at Ravensbourne on the O2 site in north Greenwich last weekend. The audience were first asked to throw the dice and choose musical bars form a score by Mozart according to a grid of numbers, and then invited to create their own unique piece of music.

The young team from West London Arts Scene were Amy Goodall, Batrisyie Hussain and Karina Rassulli and they were led by festival artistic director Gillian Spragg, who brought together their musical and technical skills.

Six-year-old Sanuji Sathischandra read a short passage about the genius Mozart and completed another new waltz during the course of the presentation. Batrisyie and Karina have also written waltzes using Mozart's system which they will play in the West London Piano Festival later this month.

The project was made possible through some original coding from Oliver Spragg. Peter Rosner, IT lecturer, then took on the considerable challenge of developing it to a usable stage.

"It has all been down to terrific teamwork and real commitment from everyone, and including some very helpful parents too," said Gillian. “The audience were very taken by the idea of using different patterns to represent the music. They enjoyed working out their own pieces using the new coding and it looks as though this could lead on to something even more interesting in the future."

Ealing Autumn Festival’s Truth and Reconciliation painting exhibition continues its tour of the borough with a visit to Northfields Library from November 19-December 1, with an open day being staged on Saturday, November 26 (2-4pm).
