Diana of Dobson’s by Cicely Hamilton is to be performed at The Questors Theatre, Ealing.

A rarely performed gem of the Edwardian theatre, the seemingly whimsical rags to riches (to rags again) romantic comedy shines a spotlight on the limited options available to women in Edwardian society.

Long days, pitiful pay, and no pleasure.  Diana leads a dreary life as a shop-girl at Dobson’s Emporium.  Until, that is, she is left a legacy of £300.  That is more than £30,000 in today’s money. Diana decides to blow it all on fine clothes and a holiday at the best hotel in Switzerland rather than attempting to save or invest it. She knows it won’t last, but wants to be able to say that she has lived. She finds herself in the Alps pursued by two men who are fascinated by her strength and audacity and, they presume, her wealth.

Lead actress Tilly Reid has this to say of the play “It has been a real privilege to play such a strong character in a forward-thinking feminist play that explores not only the inequality of women in society but also the exploitation of vulnerable women in the workforce - something that is still so relevant today.”

Hamilton was a successful actress, writer and campaigner for women’s rights.  She is celebrated for writing the lyrics of the anthem for the Suffragette movement, ‘The March of the Women.’

“Life, strife – these two are one,

Naught can ye win but by faith and daring.”

A daring and charming escape from all things Christmas!
