This weekend would have seen tens of thousands of people taking part in the London Marathon and raising millions for charities, but will now be involved in the 2.6 challenge - set up by the organisers

The Ealing-based branch of Samaritans are one of the charities hoping to raise much needed funds as 26 volunteers and supporters will be walking, cycling, running, scooting for a least a mile each.

Ealing Samaritans fundraising lead Susie Mullen says:  “The Covid-19 pandemic has had a catastrophic effect on the charity sector with the cancellation of thousands of events – notably the London Marathon, the world’s biggest one-day fundraising event. Our lines are busier than ever with so many people struggling to cope. The 2.6 Challenge gives our volunteers something uplifting to do during a particularly challenging time.”

She added: "Between us, we expect to cover more than the distance of the London Marathon.

The Challenge is to dream up an activity based around the numbers 2.6 or 26 and fundraise through JustGiving or Virgin Money Giving page

Based in Junction Road, South Ealing, Ealing, Hammersmith & Hounslow Samaritans has over 120 unpaid volunteers working seven days a week throughout the lockdown, helping to answer some of the five million calls for help that Samaritans responds to every year from people going through a difficult time.

All Samaritans branches are individual charities. Ealing, Hammersmith & Hounslow Samaritans (registered charity no. 1173588) is only able to provide emotional support thanks to the donations and legacies and fundraising by its supporters.
