160 Covid-19 Deaths at Ealing and Northwick Park Hospitals

Ealing Hospital effectively merged with Northwick Park Hospital in 2014. In this year London North West London University Healthcare Trust (LNWH) was created. LNWH is some kind of virtual hospital comprising Central Middlesex (Brent), Ealing, Northwick Park (Harrow) and St Mark’s Hospital (Harrow). Only LNWH Covid-19 mortality figures are formally released. Northwick Park dwarfs the other three hospitals in size and the majority of deaths have occurred there. LNWH has recorded far more Covid-19 hospital deaths than any other NHS hospital Trust in the UK – by a very wide margin. It’s proving impossible to discover how many Ealing residents have died at these four hospitals – or anywhere in Ealing.

You might ask why Brent, Ealing and Harrow are such Covid-19 hot spots. Brent has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in London (378). More on this in the next newsletter.

2,000 Small Businesses In Ealing Will Probably Run Out of Cash this Month

The Corporate Finance Network has estimated that 20% of the 800,000 small businesses nationally will run out of cash over the next few weeks. In 2011 Ealing Council reported that there were 11,725 businesses in Ealing. The vast proportion of these business are small businesses. 2,000 of them disappearing by May 2020 may be a conservative estimate.

All businesses are apparently struggling with the onerous eligibility criteria for Government-backed loans. There are some reports of banks offering 30% interest rates on loans. There are many reports  of banks telling customers it will take six weeks to process their loan application. Cash is clearly king in this situation and many businesses are reluctant to pay bills in a timely fashion or are increasingly just not able to pay at all.

Government Gives the Go-Ahead for Local Authorities to ‘Hold Public Meetings Remotely’

Reacting to Covid-19 restrictions on public meetings the Government has issued new digital meeting guidance at:

My guess is that Ealing Council will attempt to run its May 2020 Planning Committee meeting on a digital platform. On which digital platform is an interesting question. And when (and if) the post Covid-19 world returns to ‘normal’ will Ealing Council revert back to public meetings or stick with digital ones?

Ealing Council Covid-19 Business Survey

The Council wants to understand the impact of Covid-19 on Ealing businesses. It’s created an online survey with an end date for responses of 31 May 2020. No doubt this initiative is well intentioned, but by 31 May 2020 thousands of businesses in Ealing will have gone bust. If the Council was really anxious to discover the business impact of Covid-19, it could use the telephone. In just one day the Council could call 10 small Ealing businesses, 10 medium sized businesses and 10 large businesses – and quickly discover the Covid-19 impact.

Social Isolation Across the 61 Acres of Warren Farm

Hanwell residents are fortunate to have plenty of space to roam safely across the open countryside at Warren Farm. On 2 April 2020 Hanwell Nature won a famous victory in a digital High Court hearing. The Hon Mrs Justice Elizabeth Laing DBE ruled that Hanwell Nature had sufficient merit in its case against Ealing Council. Permission was granted to proceed toward a full, two day Judicial Review of Ealing Council’s decision not to require in Environmental Impact Assessment as part of the process of granting a 200 year lease to QPR.
