Ealing MPs Pledge on Climate Change

Local represenatatives give their support over environment

Ealing MPs have backed a pledge over climate change.

Steve Pound and Rupa Huq recently joined members of St Stephens's Church at Perivale Wood for an event called 'Speak Up Ealing!'

The MPs were asked to help protect the people, places and wild places we love from climate change. They joined local residents to enjoy a walk in the woods, listen to speakers talking about the effects of climate change on places as diverse as Perivale and the Philippines, and discuss how the problem can be highlighted.

The event was very well attended, and the rain held off until almost the end.

The local Friends of the Earth group took the opportunity to ask Dr Rupa Huq, MP Ealing Central and Acton, to sign the Pledge for the Environment, an initiative of a group of many leading environmental organisations unified by a desire for a thriving natural world and a greener, healthier society and economy.

Text of the pledge:

"I believe that following the EU referendum, the UK government, working with administrations in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh, must build a healthy and prosperous future for all.

This means a thriving natural world on land and at sea, clean air and water, communities connected to nature, and a sustainable economy.

For the wellbeing of my constituents, for people at home and abroad, and for future generations who will depend on a flourishing and secure planet, I will do everything in my power to:

• Establish the UK as a world leader on the environment by committing to match or exceed current environmental, wildlife and habitat protections.

• Ensure the UK leads on climate change by publishing robust low carbon investment plans and ratifying the Paris Agreement this year.

• Create a countryside richer in nature by supporting farmers and landowners to deliver environmental benefits alongside a thriving farming sector."

Steve Pound MP Ealing North and Virendra Sharma MP Ealing Southall have also signed.
