A former Hanwell schoolgirl is being credited with bringing England back from the brink of elimination from the Women's Euros.

24-year-old Chloe Kelly, who attended Elthorne Park High School, was the first player the England manager, Sarina Wiegman, turned to when the home team were labouring against Spain this Wednesday evening (20 July) at the AMEX stadium in Brighton.

The Spanish had dominated possession and, in the 54th minute, took a deserved lead through Esther Gonzalez. Shortly afterwards Chloe was asked to warm up (hardly necessary in the sweltering heat) and was the first of a trio of substitutions made around that time.

Chloe's energy immediately transformed the pattern of the game with England now providing more threat up front. The team had to wait until the 84th minute for the equaliser when another of the substitutes, Ella Toone, volleyed in Alessia Russo's flick-on. England held out for a nervous few minutes to take the game into extra time.

Shortly after the restart a stunning strike from Georgia Stanway gave England the lead and good game management saw them through with relatively few scares in the rest of the match.

Chloe, who currently plays her club football for Manchester City, is the youngest of seven children including five brothers with whom she learnt to play football.

Earlier in the tournament anyone else called Kelly or who shared a surname with a member of the England squad, could get a free drink at a Greene King pub if they were watching one of the England games. This offer has now ended.
