60 evacuated from building and roads closed in the area
A leak of chemicals used at a swimming pool in central Ealing required the evacuation of the building and local road closures this Wednesday (13 April). Around 60 people were asked to leave the Nuffield Health and Fitness Centre inside the Broadway Shopping Centre at around 11.40am when the leak was first detected. A significant number of emergency service vehicles attended the scene including fire engines from Ealing, Acton, Wembley and Bexley fire stations. The police say that three people were treated at the scene for inhalation from fumes thought to be from the chlorine used to disinfect the pool. Local roads were closed leading to some traffic congestion in the area but opened early in the afternoon. The Metropolitan Police said, "Firefighters have been called to reports of a smell of chemicals at a health and fitness club on The Broadway in Ealing. "Crews are carrying out a sweep of the building to determine if there are any elevated chemical readings. Around 60 people have been evacuated as a precaution and three people have been assessed on scene by London Ambulance Service crews." A spokesperson for Nuffield Health said, “There was an incident involving swimming pool chemicals this morning at our Ealing Fitness and Wellbeing Centre. No individuals have been harmed or adversely affected. As a precaution, we operated our safety protocols including evacuating our building and informing the emergency services. Our Fitness and Wellbeing Centre is set to reopen on Thursday.”
