The Arts Society Ealing presents the second  lecture in its 2019 programme on Monday 18th February at 8 pm in the Dr William Barry Lecture Theatre, University of West London, St. Mary's Road, Ealing, W5 5RF.

The lecture will be given by Sophie Oosterwijk  on the subject ‘‘Peasant Pastimes? The Art and Times of Pieter Brueghel the Elder’. The year 2019 marks 450 years since the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1569.

This Flemish artist is probably best known for his colourful depictions of peasants making merry or toiling in the fields – works that lent him the epithet ‘Peasant Bruegel’. Yet he also lived in a time of religious and political turmoil that is echoed in some of his ‘darker’ works. This lecture will show that there is much more to Bruegel than just peasant scenes.

Sophie Oosterwijk has taught art history at the universities of Manchester, Leicester and St Andrews, and now works as a freelancer for the University of Cambridge, the Royal Academy in London, the Arts Society, Martin Randall Travel and other organisations. She is also is an internationally recognised researcher and has published widely.

Visitors are welcome to attend lectures on payment of £8 per lecture. This fee is reduced to £3 for students and members of other affiliated Arts Societies. Drinks are available.
