Thousands of people once again flocked to London's oldest allotments in Northfields on Saturday (25 October) to enjoy the ever popular Halloween pumpkin trail.

Visitors were treated to a great display throughout the allotments of all things spooky, some scary and many just funny.

A barbecue, a bar serving mulled wine and beer as well as tea and cakes provided visitors with much needed refreshment.

Plotholders put a great deal of work into the day which was declared an overwhelming success and applauded by the many attendees.

The allotments date back to 1832, when the Bishop of London enclosed the site for use by the local community. The original Ealing Dean allotments were much larger, with land on both sides of Northfield Avenue. However, approximately three decades ago 60% of the total allotment site, the land to the west of Northfield Avenue, was compulsorily purchased and built on.

The site now comprises the remaining 141 allotments on the eastern side of Northfield Avenue, all of which are rented, with more than 70 people currently on the waiting list.

In September 2016, plotholders at Northfields Allotments were informed by housing charity Pathways Pathways that it intends to construct a mixed social and private housing development on part of the allotment site, a proposal that plotholders and local residents are currently opposing.

A petition opposing the development has been set up and can be accessed here:
